Background Information

The Faculty of Technological Sciences at Anton de Kom University of Suriname plays an important role in preparing students for technical professions. As Suriname’s energy sector and related industries continue to develop, the need for well-trained technical professionals is increasing. Good classrooms, practical training spaces and modern learning facilities are therefore essential.

Several FTeW buildings were in poor condition and no longer fully suitable for education. The former woodwork hall had not been used for years because of its state of deterioration. The mechanical engineering hall also needed renovation to better support lectures and practical training. This created a shortage of suitable learning spaces for students in programmes such as Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

With support from Staatsolie, two FTeW buildings are being fully renovated. The former woodwork hall will be repurposed as lecture rooms for Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering students. The mechanical engineering lecture room and practical training area are also being thoroughly upgraded. These improvements will give approximately 200 students access to a safer, more functional and more suitable learning environment.

The renovation project is part of Staatsolie’s 45th anniversary social investment initiatives and fits within the theme “Empowering communities and institutions.” Through this project, Staatsolie contributes to technical education, skills development and institutional strengthening. The renewed facilities will help prepare future engineers and technical professionals for opportunities linked to Suriname’s industrial and energy development.
